Andrea Burkins

How long have you been an owner of FBFC?

About four years. But, I’ve been shopping there for about 14 years.

Do you have experience sitting on a Board of Directors?
Yes, Head Start at Community Action Resources, and a year for the Mission Family Advisory Council who helped with child life and the NICU. I am on the Funeral Consumers Alliance board remotely, as of November.

Why do you want to serve on the Board?
It’s important to me to be part of the Asheville local food movement. As a legit Asheville born baby, it saddens me to see our community ignored for the sake of tourism. The Co-op Represents a touchstone of the heart of Asheville. People are not strangers, they can get what they need, and they can support one another on a regular basis.

Why is FBFC important to you?
I’m able to get local products I couldn’t get otherwise, it feels like home, it feels like a local watering hole. I get to see my people

How often do you shop at the Co-op?
Not often enough. My grocery store ventures are once every two weeks, as I must contend with pandemic and three kids. I try to get into the Co-op minimum twice a month.

How would you describe Co-ops to a stranger?
It’s the only local food store in Asheville, you’re guaranteed to shop local, ethical, and help your community by proxy. They also have some of the best health and beauty products.

What else would you like us to know about you?
I’m loyal. I give as much as I can to a cause. I also adapt easily, tell me where you need me and I’ll do my best to fit the part.

Why do you want to serve on the Board?

The French Broad Coop community is important to me. The Coop has provided excellent food options, service, and opportunities to my family and our community. I would like to give back to the Coop by serving on the board, particularly during this challenging time.

Why is FBFC important to you?

For me, the Coop is a trusted source for food and personal health care, an important entrepot for personal health resources. I  rely on the Coop as a source of community information.

How often do you shop at the Co-op?

Weekly

How would you describe Co-ops to a stranger?

The Coop is the most trusted source for good food in our community, it is an anchor in downtown Asheville, helping keep local community spirit alive.

What else would you like us to know about you?

For more than 20 years I have been dedicated to building just and sustainable economic communities through my work as a project management consultant and as a documentary filmmaker. I have been involved with French Broad Food Coop for eleven years as a customer, a member, and as the spouse of a long-term employee (for full disclosure, my spouse is Mary Hall Rodman). Having worked and collaborated closely with many diverse organizations, both professionally and as a volunteer and board member, I would like to make my skills and experience useful to the board and members of FBFC. The Coop is facing unprecedented challenges and opportunities. I hope to engage Coop members in our decision-making and planning processes to ensure FBFC responds to the challenges in a way that best reflects our community and membership.

Kylie Hulver

How long have you been an owner of FBFC?
I moved to Asheville this summer and became a member shortly after.

Do you have experience sitting on a Board of Directors?
My leadership experience is in co-directing retreats for which I managed incoming funds and team dynamics. Mediation, communication, and a dedication to equity have informed my practices in both my work life as a teacher and my personal relationships, and could be of service to the Board.
Why do you want to serve on the Board?
As a new resident of Asheville and local teacher, becoming a board member at the FBFC is an exciting opportunity to get more involved with the community! One of many things that has drawn me to this position is the opportunity to continue creating change related to food systems. Furthermore, I’m hoping to elevate the voices of the owners and continue the collective effort that the co-op is. I am eager to contribute my insight, relationship-building skills, and grounded perspective to the board.
Why is FBFC important to you?
The FBFC is important to me because of its multifaceted dedication to the community and its people.

How often do you shop at the Co-op?
I shop at the Co-op as often as I need and am able to! Supporting local businesses is essential to the well-being of any town and its people.

How would you describe Co-ops to a stranger?
I would describe the FBFC as a homey grocery store that is aligned with my values.

What else would you like us to know about you?
Becoming a board member would mean that I would have the opportunity to develop relationships with the other board members, owners, and community members. To tell a little bit about myself other than my above answers: I am a middle school math and social studies teacher and love my job—I often find myself overwhelmed with gratitude that I get to spend my days with some of the most authentic, creative, and kind young humans and co-teachers. When I’m not developing my curriculum or lesson planning, I’m usually romping around in the woods, tinkering with different ways to use materials in art projects, or trying to learn a new skill. I would be grateful for the opportunity to connect others in the Co-op, as well as welcome new folks in!

Terra Marshall

How long have you been an owner of FBFC?
Since 1997.

Do you have experience sitting on a Board of Directors?
No, but I have been a small business owner for 17 years.

Why do you want to serve on the Board?
I love the coop and want to help in any way I can, not only by continuing to shop there.

Why is FBFC important to you?
Working at the coop was an important and life changing experience in my early 20’s. I value community and the mission that the coop withholds in it. We are all here to lend support. Plus the fruits and veggies are the best in town 100% organic.

How often do you shop at the Co-op?
Every other week. And I order bulk amounts through the special order program.
How would you describe Co-ops to a stranger?
It is community owned, has the freshest produce in town and pays living wages. It’s not any more expensive than big chain stores and you can actually find someone to help you if you need assistance.

What else would you like us to know about you?
I moved to Asheville in 1996 and quickly came to learn about the coop. I had a neighbor clue me in to a job at the coop, and with her recommendation I got the job as a cashier. I was really an all around helper if things were slow. I advance to front end support, helped form a union with coworkers and ended my career at the coop 3.5 years in to pursue my cosmetology career. I am ready to circle back to get back to that awesome connection the coop brings.
