Co-op Happenings – News From the Board, February 2025

Dear Co-op Community,

As we step into 2025, we’re reflecting on a year that brought both challenges and triumphs to our Co-op and our community. Hurricane Helene’s devastating flooding was a sobering reminder of how quickly disaster can strike, but it also highlighted the incredible resilience and solidarity of Asheville. From neighbors helping neighbors to local organizations stepping up to provide relief, we’ve seen just how strong our community can be when it matters most.

Amid the ups and downs, 2024 was also a year of growth and positive change for the French Broad Food Co-op. We’re proud to share some updates and exciting plans as we begin this new year—especially as we celebrate a milestone that’s close to all of our hearts: 50 years as Asheville’s only community-owned grocery store! Since 1975, the Co-op has been a place where people come together to prioritize local food, sustainable practices, and community values. Through thick and thin, we’ve stood strong thanks to you, our owners, customers, and friends.

Here are a few updates as we look forward to a brighter 2025:

First, a shout-out to The Recyclery, Asheville’s beloved nonprofit bike repair shop. For many years, The Recyclery was a fixture on our property, and they’re now at a new location: the Sly Grog Lounge, 271 Haywood Street. Be sure to check them out and support their mission to keep bikes rolling in our community.

In 2024, we also tackled some much-needed improvements. We paved the lower parking lot to make the Co-op more accessible for everyone, continued with our expansion of the store, and more! These updates wouldn’t be possible without your support.

We also welcomed four new board members to help guide us into the future. We’re excited about the fresh ideas and energy that our new board members bring to the table. Read more about the board here.
